Preparing for a rubbish collection

A few minutes of preparation makes a collection quicker and avoids anything being taken by mistake.

The day before

  1. Decide exactly what is going and what is staying.
  2. Set aside anything you want to keep, and mark or separate it.
  3. Check pockets, drawers and boxes for papers, keys and valuables.
  4. Move items to ground level or near the door where you can.
  5. Make sure the route out is clear, including gates and passageways.

Parking and access

Tell Kev where a vehicle can stop. If you need a parking space or a permit, arrange it ahead. Make sure someone is there to give access at the agreed time.

Things to flag in advance

  • Electrical items, paint, chemicals, gas bottles and anything hazardous
  • Very heavy items or anything that needs two people
  • Anything that belongs to someone else or is under a legal hold

On the day

Walk through with Kev, point out what is going and what is not, and confirm anything that has changed since the quote was agreed.

Questions people ask

Do I need to bag everything up?

Not always. Say in your enquiry whether items are loose or bagged.

What if I am not at home?

Agree who will give access, and make sure they know what to leave and what to hand over.

Ready to clear some space?

needs to go.
